“We don’t just want to sit on the couch”

https://www.mpg.de/14648916/daniel-calovi-crowdfight-covid19

Daniel Calovi, a postdoc at the Max-Planck-Institute for Animal Behaviour at the department „Collectve Behaviour“ of Iain Couzin, is a co-founder of the project “crowdfight covid19”. The website, a service for COVID-19 researchers, tries to bring together people who are offering help with people looking for help. Here Daniel Calovi talks about the main concept, motivation and overall goal of the initiative. The cofounders are Sara Arganda Carreras (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain) and Alfonso Pérez Escudero, (Center for Integrative Biology, CNRS and Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France).

Supergiant star with a thick dust disc

https://www.mpg.de/1054436/Supergiant_star_imaging

How is it possible that HD 62623, a hot super-giant star on the verge of death, is surrounded by a disc, generally only associated with infant stars? Using long-baseline stellar interferometry at ESO’s VLT interferometer, a team led by Florentin Millour from Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur and Anthony Meilland from Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy could generate for the first time a three-dimensional high angular and high spectral resolution image of this star and its closest environment. They conclude that a solar-mass companion star is the key to this mystery. To attain their goal, the researchers adapted an imaging technique from radio astronomy which uses interferometric datasets.

International death counts show peaks of the pandemic

https://www.mpg.de/14915504/0605-defo-137749-international-death-counts-show-peaks-of-the-pandemic

Weekly death countscan be used to calculate how many more people are currently dying during the Covid-19 pandemic than would be expected according to trends in recent years. Internationally, there are clear differences: While in England the death counts in March and April were almost twice as high as in the previous five years, and in Sweden significantly more people died than in the comparable months of the previous years, the increase in Germany is moderate. However, all three countries seem to be past the peak of the curve.

Close-ups of the Sun

https://www.mpg.de/15159523/0716-aero-061986-closer-than-ever-before-solar-orbiter-s-first-images-of-the-sun

Only a few months after its launch, ESA’s Solar Orbiter has captured images of the Sun from a previously unattainable distance. Among other things, these images reveal structures in the Sun’s atmosphere that could possibly be interpreted as so-called nanoflares, very small bursts of radiation. The images from the six remote sensing instruments published today were taken in the days before and after 15 June, when the spacecraft reached the point closest to the Sun on its current orbit. Only 77 million kilometres separated the probe from our star. Although this early mission phase is primarily aimed at commissioning the instruments, the data already provide impressive evidence of Solar Orbiter’s uniquely comprehensive view of the Sun – from the magnetic fields at the surface to the particles streaming into space. The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Germany is an important partner of the mission and is significantly involved in four of the instruments.

Interleukin-33 involved in immunity to SARS-CoV-2

https://www.mpg.de/16704444/0408-immu-interleukin-33-involved-in-immunity-to-sars-cov-2-153800-x

Study by Max Planck researchers and physicians from the University of Freiburg Medical Center unveil a novel feature of COVID-19 immunity, which could have implications for future therapies. The study points to the involvement of Interleukin 33, an important danger signal, when immune cells encounter SARS-CoV-2 for a second time.

InSight: Touchdown auf dem Mars

https://www.mpg.de/12511083/insight-touchdown-auf-dem-mars

Safely simulating risks in a pandemic

https://www.mpg.de/18408499/safely-simulating-risks-in-a-pandemic

Is it possible to conduct experiments about risk-taking during pandemics without endangering participants? To safely investigate the effectiveness of public health interventions and simulate the dynamics of virus transmission, researchers from the University of Plymouth, UK, the IESE Business School in Spain and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development have developed a game-based experiment. Their findings have been published in the journal Science Advances.
