Calle Gral. Aureliano Rivera 17-B Villa Obregon Distrito Federal Mexico 13 August 1947 My very dearest Annerl! Your letter from 24 July arrived while Catharine, Hester (my eldest, below us in the picture, kneeling) and I were as good as lying on our deathbeds with mushroom poisoning. Catharine and Hester have now almost completely recovered, and I’m doing much better again despite the constant headaches and diarrhoea. The deadly mushrooms were a gift from a Swiss friend who has been studying fungi for twenty years, looking at them under microscopes, reading God knows how many volumes about them. She’s supposed …
She’s supposed to know more about her subject than anyone else in the country!

Full text in translation: ‚Dear friend, Here I am again, in this place, I was forced by Yulla because of my extreme tiredness, I couldn’t do it anymore. I must admit that she was right. With my exhibition in New York that is starting in May, I had to lend all my new materials. Which means that I must work at the studio but also at the foundry that is an hour away from New York. With the travel that I’m already doing coming into New York, it’s becoming a lot of daily travel and it’s tiresome. After a while …
Which means I rarely have the time to go out or do anything else than my sculptures

12 September Dear Baroness Schey! I’m lying here on the balcony in short sleeves again – in a tornado that’s threatening to carry me away along with the chair, the balcony and the house. The meadows down in the valley are greener than I’ve ever seen them. The mountains are close and massive. There’s something luscious and animated about the greens and greys with the ever-changing blacks and whites and the highlights in blue, red and yellow. I don’t know how else to put it.

Berlin 21 November Dearest Annerl! I’ve just received your last little letter, and I’m going to write you a few quick lines before I continue with my packed programme for the day. Wedding awfully nice, impressive church ceremony, banquet for the gods, and your Etl even managed to give a fine speech at table. Berlin is full of old and new relatives and acquaintances – many of them quite delightful (though none of them compare to you and the kids, the VERY DEAREST OF HUMAN BEINGS!). In addition I’ve been visiting museums, nattering endlessly etc. and the days are flying …
about it soon, because you and the kids are more like family to me than anyone else
