The future of the Amazon rainforest and its influence on the global climate were the focus of the visit by Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Steffi Lemke to the ATTO – Amazon Tall Tower Observatory in Brazil. The President and the Federal Minister for the Environment visited the German-Brazilian research station, in which the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz participate, on January 2, 2023.

Early warning of market bubbles

An international team of interdisciplinary researchers has identified mathematical metrics to characterize the fragility of financial markets. Their paper “Network geometry and market instability” sheds light on the higher-order architecture of financial systems and allows analysts to identify systemic risks like market bubbles or crashes.

“Civil courage is needed – everywhere”

https://www.mpg.de/11878459/civil-courage-interview-anna-baumert

Showing civil courage is not easy. However, at a time when populism is on the rise, civil courage and the ability to intervene on behalf of others are needed more than ever. But why do we hesitate to stand up for justice so often? And what distinguishes civilly courageous people from others? Anna Baumert and her team are trying to find answers to these questions. One thing is certain: we can learn how to intervene astutely and constructively in any situation – even relatively minor ones.
Otherwise you can put yourself in very serious danger.

MPI for Radio Astronomy

In this spectral range, which is invisible to the human eye, the researchers observe both infant stellar objects and stars frail with age, molecules in the interstellar medium and far away radio galaxies, and the centre of the Milky Way and magnetic fields, as well as dust and gas at cosmological distances.
These fast radio bursts are far enough away that they pose no danger to humanity.

Kenya’s 2017 election and its aftermath

https://www.mpg.de/11436923/elections-kenya

Kenyans went to the polls on August 7, 2017 in one of the most hotly contested elections in the country’s history. The incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee party faced Raila Odinga of the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) for the second time in what was Raila’s fourth and last campaign for the presidency. The stakes of the race were very high because of the ‘winner takes all’ nature of Kenyan politics, historical score-settling between the leading presidential contenders, and looming battles over future succession. The election was also closely watched because for the first time, the effects of Kenya’s new devolved constitution were expected to be felt in its politics.
Positions are becoming more entrenched by the day and there is a real danger of escalation
