The Max Planck Society established one of the first technology transfer institutions in Germany; formerly named Garching Instrumente, this company is now known as Max Planck Innovation GmbH. Over the last 50 years, the company has supervised more than 4,500 inventions and concluded 2,500 license agreements. Almost 80 percent of the roughly 160 spin-offs supervised by Max Planck Innovation are still in business today; seven of them have even made it to the stock exchange.

Research summit in Mexico

A Max Planck Symposium with high-ranking participants will take place from 27 February to 1 March in Mexico City. They will include leading scientists from Mexico as well as Directors and Group Leaders from 14 Max Planck Institutes. In addition to exchange on the latest research results with Mexican partners, the event also aims to identify potential research topics for cooperation.

East Africa is currently being plagued by the largest swarms of locusts in decades. In some regions of Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia, the insects have almost completely destroyed the harvest. Iain Couzin investigates animal swarms at the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior and the University of Constance. Years ago, he almost died in Africa in search of swarming desert locusts.

Seit Ende der 1990er Jahre ist der Rückgang der Erwerbsbeteiligung älterer Männer durch steil ansteigende Erwerbsquoten ersetzt worden. Auch die Erwerbsquote älterer Frauen ist dramatisch gestiegen. Unsere Forschungen am Max-Planck-Institut für Sozialrecht und Sozialpolitik zeigen, dass Rentenreformen und die Erhöhung der finanziellen Anreize zur Arbeit im Alter diese historische Wende erklären können.
