“An astounding coincidence with theory”

What sounds paradoxical is reality: Black holes have a shadow! In the Messier 87 galaxy, astronomers were able to observe such a phenomenon for the first time with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). The Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn had a first row seat. Anton Zensus heads the “Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry” department. The Department deals with a technique that enabled the discovery in the first place. We talked to Anton Zensus, Chairman of the EHT Collaboration Council, about how the successful observation came about and what the results mean.

Cells made from water in oil: Using microfluidics technology, a Franco-German research team first generates tiny droplets (top) into which the components of a simple metabolism are then injected (bottom). A team led by J. Lelieveld from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and his Halo research aircraft also found out that it also spreads air pollutants all over the world.

Quarantine without protection

As would-be criminals heed stay-at-home orders, major cities across the globe have reported a significant drop in both property and violent crimes. The numbers of burglary, assault, murder, robbery, and grand larceny cases have dropped following the outbreak of the pandemic. This is due to the lack of opportunities, and the recognition that life is worth staying away from the public for. But for many, we are living in an utmost dreadful time, and it is still not over: victims of intimate partner violence are likely to suffer more under a constant threat when staying at home together with their aggressors.

Electronically generated rhythms are often perceived as too artificial. New software now allows producers to make rhythms sound more natural in computer-produced music. Research at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (MPI-DS) and at Harvard University forms the basis for new and patented methods of electronically generated rhythms according to patterns of musicians following fractal statistical laws. The process, which produces natural-sounding rhythms, has now been licensed to Mixed In Key LLC, whose music software is used worldwide by leading music producers and internationally renowned DJs. A product called “Human Plugins”, which uses this technology, has now been launched.
