Ana Claudia Griffin is a communications specialist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Conservation and Sustainability (CCS). She is passionate about creating communication best practices and building relationships among stakeholders. Griffin strives to promote conservation and sustainability by developing communications plans, implementing strategies, writing reports and fact sheets, and leading workshops on communications and branding.

Morgan Maly is a Ph.D. candidate and graduate student researcher at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Species Survival and Center for Conservation Genomics. Maly’s interests are in conservation genetics and genomics. She’s particularly interested in utilizing genetic and genomic data to manage endangered species populations, the role of microbiomes in species conservation and management, and host/microbe interactions.

Nathalia Salazar is an education specialist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Conservation and Sustainability (CCS), where she develops educational programs and strategies to promote the understanding of biodiversity conservation.

E. Emperatriz Gamero is currently a fellow at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Conservation Genomics, where she conducts lab work for her master’s degree. Her research aims to propose a phylogenetic hypothesis about the origins of the endemic and critically endangered Margarita capuchin, and its divergence from mainland capuchins. She hopes to examine longstanding questions about specific versus subspecific status of the species based on their colonization of Margarita Island. Gamero’s projects include:

Our veterinary team visited the giant panda habitat last week for routine checkups on all of the pandas. Of special note in Bei Bei’s check-up, the team successfully collected blood and gave him two vaccinations.

Our fishing cat kitten, Wasabi, and his mom, Electra, are now on exhibit daily at Asia Trail’s fishing cat exhibit. Lek (Wasabi’s dad), is on exhibit in the second yard. Wasabi was born May 17, but had to wait to go into the outdoor exhibit until all of his vaccinations were up to date.
