Der Rat wurde 1958 als Organ zur Bündelung der anglo-indischen Schulen gegründet und hat die Aufgabe, Examen auf drei Stufen durchzuführen. Dabei gilt die Maxime, den Schulen eine weitgehende Autonomie zu gewähren und Pluralität zuzulassen, so weit sie den Grundsätzen der Erziehung zur Demokratie entspricht. Zertifikate werden für den Abschluss der 10. bzw. 12. Klasse erteilt sowie für den Abschluss einer Berufsausbildung.
