Scientific collaboration with Israel, a leading nation in research and innovation, is essential to us. In the light of decades of inspiring intellectual exchange and the special relationship between science organizations in our countries, we feel compelled to take a stand on recent developments that can negatively affect international scientific cooperation. In the most recent call for proposals for the ERC Starting Grants, the Max Planck Society was once again successful, scooping up a total of 20 grants. Only the French CNRS was more successful, receiving 25 grants. With a success rate of almost 30 percent, Max Planck’s applications were more than twice as successful as the average.

On September 5, 2024, young researchers from Max Planck Institutes secured 16 of the 98 ERC Starting Grants awarded to Germany. These prestigious grants, each averaging €1.5 million, will enable recipients to support their research groups for five years. Additionally, the funding aims to empower them to launch independent projects and lead their own teams, fostering innovative research ideas.
