Eve’s Achilles Heel | Max-Planck-Gesellschaft

In general, both men and women perform better in competitive situations. However, when women are in a state of elevated stress, competition has the opposite effect and leads to worse performance. As a consequence, women under stress increasingly shy away from competition, according to a recently published study from economic researchers from Germany, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Their results could help explain why women are underrepresented in high-paid jobs and in leadership positions. The results also have implications for efficient management practices, including hiring and performance incentives.

Key to rapid planet formation | Max-Planck-Gesellschaft

Ring-shaped disturbances in disks of gas and dust orbiting young stars can trigger the formation of several gas giants. Researchers have come to this conclusion based on a new model that combines all the physical processes involved in planet formation for the first time. According to this model, giant planets can form more efficiently and faster than previously assumed. These results are consistent with recent observations.

Zooming in on Dark Matter | Max-Planck-Gesellschaft

Most of the matter in the Universe is dark and thus not directly observable. In results just published in the journal Nature, an international research team harnessed supercomputers in China and Europe to zoom into a typical region of a virtual universe by a totally unprecedented factor, equivalent to that needed to recognise a flea on the surface of the full Moon. This allowed the team to make detailed pictures of hundreds of virtual dark matter haloes from the very largest to the very smallest expected in our Universe.
