Coping with Corona through Music

Beyond the immediate health risks of the Covid-19 pandemic, the containment measures it necessitates have brought with them a number of other stressors that can undermine individual and collective well-being. As part of an international research project, the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics investigated whether musical engagement is an effective strategy for socio-emotional coping during lockdown.

Light as a Fairy Tale

“Feel-good films” are usually dismissed by film critics as being sentimental and without intellectual merit. But their popularity with audiences, who seek them out precisely because of their “feel-good” qualities, tells a more favorable story. Now, for the first time, this popular movie genre is examined scientifically. A new study from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics investigates which feel-good films are considered by viewers to be prototypical and which factors constitute their feel-good effect.

Brain areas for distinguishing good and evil

https://www.mpg.de/10680717/how-the-brain-evaluates-emotionally-difficult-situations

When someone offends you while smiling, should your brain interpret it as a genuine smile or as an offense? Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig and the University of Haifa, Israel, have identified neural mechanisms that help us understand whether a difficult social situation is emotionally positive or negative. To do this, they used emotionally confusing scenes from movies like Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs”.

In large swathes of Germany’s industrial Ruhr Valley region, coal mining is a thing of the past as is true in other European coalfields. But people in the affected regions continue to be hard hit by the associated job losses, as jobs not only secured their livelihoods, but also created a sense of community. At the Max Planck Institute for Human Development Julia Wambach is looking into what replaced worker solidarity and has come across two committed football clubs: FC Schalke 04 and the French club RC Lens.

A comet turns into the Rosetta stone

https://www.mpg.de/10756097/rosetta-results

It is the end of a long journey: launched on 2 March 2004, the Rosetta space probe swung into an orbit around the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in August 2014 and set down the Philae lander onto the cometary surface in November of the same year. The mother probe is itself now set to land on the comet’s nucleus – and thereby complete the mission. However, scientists will be working on all the recorded images and measurement data for a while yet. The initial findings already promise to provide a wealth of new knowledge.
