Several are obviously not by Barbara Ker-Seymer, including one or two of Edward Burra, one by Marty Mann, and one of Beryl Cook. Some photographs are annotated on the back with details of subjects, places and dates or with intructions for printing. Many of the photographs bear Ker-Seymer’s copyright stamp.

‘Self-portraits Commissioned by Art News and Review‘, collection owner: Art News and Review, 1949–68 – Tate Archive | Tate

Art News and Review was set up in 1949 by Richard Gainsborough. The principle purpose of the review was to list all, and review many, of the exhibitions current in Britain. Richard Gainsborough ran the Review until he died, aged 73, in 1969. The architect John Gainsborough took over from his father and was in charge of the Review until 1978. The magazine still exists today under its new title The Arts Review. All the portraits in this collection were commissioned by Art News and Review between 1949 and 1959 to illustrate the front cover of the magazine. Bernard Denvir, …
