Lipchitz entrusted the care of his house and his works of art to Jeanne Bucher. ‘‘Letter from Jeanne Bucher to Jacques Lipchitz‘, Jean

https://www.tate.org.uk/art/archive/items/tga-897-1-1-69-1/letter-from-jeanne-bucher-to-jacques-lipchitz

The letter itself was dated simply ’24 February‘, the envelope was dated 27 November 1925. Probably, this is likely the first message from Bucher to Lipchitz. She addresses him as ‚Lipschitz‘ and says that ‚I like ‚Liebschitz‘ very much‘, referring to the mistake of their common friend ‚Sybile‘ and says a lot about the orthography of the Lipchitz’s surname. The rest of the letter is composed of small talk with the description of nature around the place where she lives (‚ten days of darkness‘) and asks to pass her greetings to Berthe and Andre [Shimkevich, Berthe’s son].

Jeanne tells that it is already eight days since she returned to Paris. She writes: ‚Switzerland made me a good inquiry; here I am in front of my paintings, my editors, and I understand, yes, I understand too well how difficult everything is, almost impossible, because it can be achieved in the best sense or can only be done with great power, more material than other . And the mean thing is not holding me back. So I am waiting for inspiration, or a miracle, and at worst I would however rejoice in the interim to be able to live …
