Sometimes ignorance can be of an advantage. A well-known example is double blind studies in medicine, in which neither the participants nor the medical professionals know who belongs to the experimental or control group. In this way a placebo effect can be ruled out. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of deliberate ignorance, the conscious choice not to seek information, has so far received little attention. Two Max Planck Directors have now shed more light onto it. Researchers from various disciplines have become interested in this approach.
