Solidarity in the stadium

https://www.mpg.de/18618260/solidarity-in-the-stadium?c=12643140

In large swathes of Germany’s industrial Ruhr Valley region, coal mining is a thing of the past as is true in other European coalfields. But people in the affected regions continue to be hard hit by the associated job losses, as jobs not only secured their livelihoods, but also created a sense of community. At the Max Planck Institute for Human Development Julia Wambach is looking into what replaced worker solidarity and has come across two committed football clubs: FC Schalke 04 and the French club RC Lens.
On their website, Schalke 04 explains: „In combination with the unique solidarity

LIGO and Virgo catch their biggest fish so far

https://www.mpg.de/15315800/0901-grav-057313-ligo-und-virgo-fangen-ihren-bislang-dicksten-fisch

GW190521 is a new gravitational wave signal. It is the result of the merger of the most massive and most distant black holes to date. The remnant of GW190521 is a black hole with 142 solar masses. For the first time the formation of an intermediate-mass black hole was directly observed.
More information is available on the Virgo website at http://www.virgo-gw.eu.

Clouds blanket the night side of the hot exoplanet WASP-43b

https://www.mpg.de/21875918/0424-astr-jwst-wasp43b-clouds-150980-x

The James Webb Space Telescope created a temperature map of the exoplanet WASP-43b. The nearby parent star causes temperatures on the day side to rise to a blazing 1250 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, eternal night reigns on the other side. Fierce winds blow the scorching hot air to the night side, where it cools to 600 degrees Celsius, forming clouds and covering the entire hemisphere. These storms affect the chemical reactions so much that hardly any methane can form.
