An X-ray laser provides details of X-ray emissions by highly ionised iron (iron XVII) in an ultra-hot plasma. The measurements of a research team headed by S. Bernitt and J. R. Crespo López-Urrutia from the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics facilitate improvements to and greater precision in quantitative models of the X-ray spectrum, and thus in the understanding of plasmas surrounding black holes and supernovae.
