Astronomers’ industrial espionage | Max-Planck-Gesellschaft

Using radio data from the ALMA observatory and physical modelling, astronomers led by Kamber Schwarz (Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and University of Arizona) have managed to determine the mass of a potential “planet factory,” the protoplanetary disk around the star GM Aurigae. From their reconstruction, which includes a determination of the disk’s temperature profile, the astronomers deduce that the factory may just have started production: in an unstable region, conditions should be right to form a giant gas planet. The results showcase the increasing ability of astronomers to probe physical properties of planet formation as it happens.

LISA Pathfinder exceeds expectations | Max-Planck-Gesellschaft

After a picture-perfect launch and a journey of approximately 1.5 million kilometres from Earth towards the sun, the scientific phase of LISA Pathfinder began on March 1, 2016. The researchers are more than satisfied with the recently presented results of the first two months. „With LISA Pathfinder we have created the quietest place known to humankind. The performance of the mission is spectacular and exceeded all our expectations,“ says Karsten Danzmann, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute, AEI).
