A metal-organic framework (MOF) separates the heavy hydrogen isotope deuterium from ordinary hydrogen more efficiently than previous methods. As a group of researchers headed by M. Hirscher from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems have found out, the isotope separation is achieved by quantum sieving, which is based on the tunnel effect and the different adsorption energies of the two isotopes.
