The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) provides modest funding for small-scale, high-impact projects in more than 120 countries eligible for official development assistance (ODA). The CFLI has an annual programming budget of $26.8 million, with projects averaging $31,000 each. Projects are planned and implemented mainly by local organizations, and are selected and approved by the relevant Canadian Embassy or High Commission.

We have come a long way since the first woman to represent Canada abroad, Margaret Meagher, was appointed ambassador to Israel in 1958. Now, almost 65 years later, Canada is among the countries with the greatest proportion of women occupying key leadership roles in diplomacy, having achieved gender parity in ambassadorial and senior management positions. Today, 3 of them talk to us about the diplomatic leadership of women in Global Affairs Canada (GAC).
