On the 30th of March 2017, the Heidelberg City Council approved an extension of the use of Patrick Henry Village for another year until 30th of April 2018 – the agreement was signed in mid-May. Heidelberg, thereby agrees that not more than 1,000 people – in justified emergencies a maximum of 2,000 people – are accommodated in PHV at the same. In return, Baden-Württemberg helps the city of Heidelberg purchase PHV and carry out further city planning developments on the site. The aim is to promote negotiations with the federal state to acquire the available area successively and – adhering to the general conditions – to allow for a development thereof. Heidelberg needs this last major development area to realise residential, business and scientific projects. As long as Baden-Württemberg operates PHV, the city of Heidelberg is exempted from taking in any additional refugees under the „Königstein Key“
