The work began with projects of the political education in Azerbaijan, from 2002 also in Armenia and Georgia. The office is located in Tbilisi, Georgia. The main focus of the work is the transformation process of former soviet republics towards modern democracies with free political systems based on social market economy and the rule of law.

On April 5, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) introduced a new currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), backed by 2,522 kg of gold and US$100 million in foreign currency reserves. Despite the declining use of the gold standard globally, Zimbabwe adopted this system to de-dollarise its economy and address currency and exchange rate issues, which saw the previous Zimbabwean dollar lose about 114% of its value between January and March 2024.

Markus joined the foundation in 2012 after spending six years as a political advisor in the parliamentary group of FDP, the German liberal party. Prior to this, he obtained a Master’s degree in Political Science at Bonn University. For the foundation he has been active in Brussels and Athens, fostering European integration and liberal cooperation wherever possible. He currently heads the unit for Europe in the foundation’s headquarters in Germany and thus closely cooperates with both FNF’s Central and Western European and the Eastern and Southeastern European offices.
