From 19-21 April, activists and representatives of various human rights organizations, NGOs and think tanks from the Western Balkans came together in Ečka, Serbia to discuss the omnipresent topic of hate crime and hate speech.

Last Saturday, December 2, in collaboration with the Civic Republican Foundation, we held the „Women in Action“ program. The event brought together more than thirty women and marked the culmination of this year’s cycle of events. „Women with Purpose“ and „Women with Projects“ trace a progression that reflects both the personal evolution of the participants and the impact on their environments, which was made visible in this last meeting.

Ein Thema, das uns alle angeht, denn es gibt keine Phase im Leben von Mädchen und Frauen, die nicht von Gewalt betroffen ist, egal ob wir ihr ausgesetzt sind oder ob wir sie ignorieren. Obwohl Gewalt weit verbreitet ist, werden ihre Opfer oft nicht wahrgenommen.

Das Regionalbüro erfasst insgesamt 23 Staaten Südost- und Osteuropas und ist derzeit mit seinen acht Projektbüros (Sofia, Bukarest, Belgrad, Istanbul, Tiflis, Kiew und Moskau) in 17 Ländern aktiv vor Ort tätig. Das Regionalbüro hat seinen Sitz seit 2007 in Sofia, Bulgarien. Regionalbüroleiter ist Martin Kothé. Das Regionalbüro führt eine Reihe von Initiativen und Programmen durch, die eine übergeordnete Funktion für die Region besitzen. So fördert beispielsweise die jährliche „Future of Freedom“- Konsultation das politische Gespräch zwischen Partnern, liberalen Meinungsführern und Multiplikatoren aus Politik und Gesellschaft.

The Sofia office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom is responsible for the activities of the Foundation in Bulgaria and North Macedonia. Our mission is to facilitate the promotion of the principles of liberal democracy, the rule of law, political pluralism, and free markets, in a collaborative partnership with local and international partners. Our standard instruments include political education, policy support, and political dialogue, realised through regular events and publications.

Romania became part of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Southeast Europe’s sub-region in the early 1990s. The regional SEE office was already established 1999 in Bucharest when in 2006, the entire central coordination of FNF’s work was moved to Sofia. In 2014 FNF re-opened a bureau for Romania and its sister-country of Moldova in Bucharest. In over 20 years of ceaseless activity, the FNF has worked with all the local liberal parties, forces and NGO’s, and by doing so, made thousands of young people interested in liberalism. Today the main political partner is the USR party. The FNF is also in contact with all the local NGO’s who fight for the ideal of freedom. As in the past, the strengthening of the liberal youth and the woman’s movement, both inside and outside of political and apolitical organizations, remains a core focus of our activities: seminars, workshops, forums, conferences, event series, short-term and advisory missions, publications, web-based virtual learning opportunities, regional and international dialogue events and research activities. FNF is now a recognized voice of true liberalism in Romania which, in the future, will try to support all those liberal forces and movements who fight for freedom.

In Rumänien steht redaktionell unabhängiger Journalismus im öffentlichen Interesse vor ernsthaften Herausforderungen, die sich im kommenden Jahr, einem Superwahljahr (EU-, Lokal-, Parlaments- und Präsidentschaftswahlen), noch verschärfen könnten. Der jüngste Bericht der FNF in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Zentrum für unabhängigen Journalismus (CJI) stellt die Abhängigkeit der rumänischen Medien von der staatlichen Förderung und ihre versteckten Finanzierungsmechanismen vor.

Bundespräsident Steinmeier wurde in Bukarest vom rumänischen Präsidenten Klaus Iohannis empfangen. Für Rumänien ist Deutschland gemeinsam mit den USA der wichtigste außenpolitische Partner. Beide Präsidenten unterstützen das von EU-Kommissionspräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen angekündigte Ölembargo gegen Russland. Die Sicherheit des Schwarzmeerraumes und Stärkung der Ostflanke der NATO standen auch zur Debatte.
