The National Institute for the Evaluation of the Education and Training System (INVALSI) is the successor of the former CEDE (Centro Europeo dell´ Educazione) and has been established in 1999. Its considerably increased tasks as an „agency supporting the autonomy of schools“ are as follows: 1. Evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of the education system as a whole and in detail – even at the individual school level, where appropriate – and cross-referencing the national situation within an international context. 2. Analysing the causes of student failure and study abandonment, with reference to the social context and to the kinds of education offered. 3. Evaluating user satisfaction. 4. Providing support and technical assistance for school authorities in order to set up autonomous evaluation and support initiatives for individual schools, also via freely accessible databanks for schools to consult. 5. Evaluating the effects of education policy legislation. 6. Evaluating the results of innovation projects and initiatives promoted at national level. 7. Assuring Italian participation in international research projects in the evaluation sphere and in fields linked to organisational and didactic innovation. On its website INVALSI offers comprehensive information on its research activities, activities and events and a multiplicity of services for educational practitioners, administrators and researchers.
