Nordic inter-governmental co-operation on research and education is headed up by the education and research ministers, who make up the MR-U. The role of the Nordic Council of Ministers for Education and Research is to help ensure that the Nordic Region retains a leading position as a knowledge and skills region. Nordic co-operation involves Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden as well as the three autonomous areas, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and the Åland Islands. The political co-operation is built on common values and a willingness to achieve results that contribute to a dynamic development and increase Nordic competencies and competiveness. In this context, MR-U concentrates on promoting Nordic synergies in the following key areas: schools and adult education, higher education and research, language co-operation throughout the region and information and communications technology.
