Scimitar-horned Oryx Calves Born in the Wild | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Three scimitar-horned oryx calves have now been born in the wild. Species reintroductions led by Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and the Government of Chad began last year. SCBI ecologists collect behavioral data on the reintroduced oryx using satellite collars.

Young animals learn what it means to be an animal—what to eat, how to behave and more—from their parents. For Yipes, our 1-year-old male Hartmann’s mountain zebra, those lessons most recently came from his father, 7-year-old Rogan.

On Feb. 2, our youngest zebra, Yipes, turned 7 months old. It is hard to believe that he is already a juvenile! Over the past few months, we have seen him become much more rambunctious and goofy like his father, Rogan.
