Maned Wolf Matchmaking | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Maned wolves in the North American population have their own matchmaker. Nucharin Songsasen is a biologist at SCBI and Species Survival Plan coordinator. It’s her job to decide which animals to breed based on their genetics, personality and health, among other traits.

Ellen is a community ecologist with expertise in entomology. Her research focuses on plants, insects, and species interactions, the glue that holds ecosystems together. In rangeland systems, she studies the effects of mammal communities, grazing regimes, and management on ecological communities. Ellen also researches responses to alternations to biogeochemcial cycles, a hallmark of the Anthropocene.

Dr. Neiffer has over 30 yrs experience in zoological medicine, working with both captive and free-ranging wildlife as well as aquatic species including fish and marine mammals. Dr. Neiffer’s professional interests and areas of expertise include in-situ related species and environmental health assessments, taking part in sustainable conservation projects/programs, One-health programs with a conservation component, disease transmission at the wildlife/human/livestock interface, developing anesthetic protocols, fish medicine, hoof-stock medicine, soft tissue surgery, and teaching.
